What To Do When It’s a 1,000 Degrees Outside

Okay, I’m not going to sugarcoat it – it’s bloody hot and humid here! I mean way hotter than last summer and the summer before – I don’t really remember much of any of it! So what do you do when it’s a 1,000 degrees outside and it’s the weekend?

Get yourself to some water! Granted we don’t have an ocean in Middle Tennessee, but we plenty of lakes and streams and waterfalls and when was the last time you went to a waterfall? There are some spectacular waterfalls just a short drive from Franklin. Pack a picnic -head out early and go hang out at a waterfall.

You can go to:

Burgess Falls – 4000 Burgess Falls Drive – Sparta

It’s about 1 1/2 hours from here and there are really 4 falls plus they have oodles of things for the whole family to enjoy. Spend the day and take in our beautiful state. For more information, go here.

Cane Creek Falls in Falls Creek State Park – 2000 Village Camp Road – Pikeville

About 2 hours away but really amazing and there’s a huge swimming hole at the base of the falls. Have you ever gone swimming at the base of a waterfall? It’s so refreshing and it will definitely give you relief from the heat!

These are my top two recommendations but I’ll be back with more in the next couple of weeks.

How about taking a canoe trip down the Duck River. I promise you…you’ll have a blast. We did it last year and we’re still talking about it.

Now if you’re not the outdoorsy type, why not take in the Italian Fashion Exhibit. I have not been yet, but come on…who doesn’t LOVE Italian Fashion from back in the day? Think 1945! This exhibit runs through September 7, 2015. For more information, visit the Frist Center.

Hang out in Franklin at night. There’s music everywhere and when the sun sets you can feel our sweet town light up in a whole new way. Grab a pizza at Mellow Mushroom and listen to some music. Take in a concert at Puckett’s Grocery or stop by Gray’s on Main for a night cap or the best chocolate cobbler you’ll ever taste in your life. You can also just stroll down Main Street and window shop while eating some ice cream.

You should know also about the Summer Concerts at Carnton Plantation. There isn’t one this weekend, but this is a super fun way to spend a Sunday evening under the stars. Truth be told, my favorite part of these concerts are the fireflies aglow in the fields. Truly a tiny bit of magic.

You could also put the top down, take a drive, count the stars and dance by the light of the moon! And in case you were wondering there will be a Blue Moon on July 31st! Now that’s something to celebrate.

If you do venture out at night – be sure to wear your bug spray. These days I’m using Skeeter and it works plus it doesn’t contain any Deet which is a big deal for me. It’s less expensive online than in the store. Want it? Click the bottle. It really works and I should know because I’m pretty sure when I step outside the mosquitoes have a party!
