In light of all the sorrow and massive changes happening in today’s world, I’ve been spending a lot of time organizing and focusing on my priorities. Who and what matters most? How do I refocus my life to be more present…more loving…more giving…a better friend…a better wife…a better Mom…and a better daughter, and a better member of my community.
There’s always room for better.
I’m amazed at how we celebrate Thanksgiving and count our many blessings and then we head out to the Black Friday Sales and get trampled by crazy shoppers looking for the best deal.
I admit…it baffles me and I’ve never joined in the frenzy.
What if this year…
We said NO to Black Friday sales and all their craziness, and instead we supported our local, small business owners and made a difference in their lives?
Franklin has taught me how much this matters and may I just say…We have the most wonderful shopping here with shop owners who deeply care about creating a beautiful holiday shopping experience for YOU!
Here’s the thing…small businesses represent everything that I personally think we need to come home to. They work tirelessly to keep their doors open and they’re dedicated to serving their customers.
They have loved ones to feed, clothe and keep a roof over their heads. They work when you and I are sleeping. They rest after the holidays, maybe.
There’s something just magical about strolling the streets of any small city or town and searching for that special gift that I guarantee you won’t find at a big box store. In the past I’ve bought and received countless items from major department and big box stores and I have zero recollection of where any of them came from.
But…I can tell you a story about every special treasure I’ve purchased in Franklin and where it came from, and it has meaning to me because it had meaning to the store owner. It also reminds me of slowing down and taking my time and not being in such a frenzied rush.
I don’t think gifts should be about finding the best deal on a sale item. I think gift giving is finding that sweet item that says, “I care about you.”
I think most folks today are dying to come home…to find some sanity and sweetness in a world gone mad…to bring back the warmth of the holidays and share in the magic of this time of year.
Will you join me in an effort to keep our local shops and makers thriving throughout the holiday season? If you need tips on places to go in Franklin, just drop me a line…I’m happy to share.
Maybe 2015 is the year we move past the commercialism and find the deeper meaning in the holidays.
Happy Local Shopping!
