One of the big bonuses that came with our house in Franklin is the garden. It’s magical!
And full of perennials that bloom throughout the spring…summer and fall.
It’s the garden I’ve always dreamed of having.
It even came with blackberry and raspberry vines and a blueberry bush! I mean…how great is that?
I love to sit in the garden and watch birds fill up at the bird feeder. I love to listen to the fountain bubbling over.
I really…really love my garden and it’s clear that plants grow mighty well here in Franklin, Tennessee. If you’re a gardener, you’ll love it. There are gardening events galore…and garden clubs and of course, there’s Southern Living Magazine, a monthly must read, which features the most glorious gardens in the South.
But there’s one problem…
As lush as the plants are…the WEEDS are more lush…and I’ve never seen so many different varieties! It’s a weed party!
It’s really quite something.
Everyone told us to mulch and we did. (And who knew there were so many different kinds of mulch?)
We mulched and mulched and mulched to keep the weeds at bay, but…
I just spent 3 1/2 hours in my garden pulling weeds and I’m not even finished. I’m pretty sure, if I sit outside long enough, I can watch them grow!
It’s the most amazing thing and at the same time FRUSTRATING.
But there’s a lesson here and as you know…this year is all about lessons.
Until recently, I spent my life living in Los Angeles and I had a gardener. His job was to keep the weeds away…and make sure that the lawn and garden were perfectly groomed. (It wasn’t ever perfect, but we tried.)
Now that I’m living in Franklin, I’m finding that some weeds mixed in with the plants and flowers is really not a very big deal.
Does my garden look better without weeds? Yep!
Am I going to make myself crazy worrying about them? Nope!
It’s all about perception and somehow letting go of the desire to do everything perfectly.
The weeds will always win in the end, especially when a spring downpour gives them all the nourishment they need!
If any of you have some clever tips for controlling weeds, I’d love to hear from you. I’m not too excited about spraying them with some kind of poison.
