I told y’all yesterday that I spent the afternoon with Kim Leggett of City Farmhouse fame while she was decorating a house for the Westhaven Parade of Home Tour which begins today, December 6 through December 7. All proceeds benefit the Hillsboro Band…and what I love about this is that you gather all kinds of fabulous decorating inspiration while supporting a great cause!
So…part of the afternoon was spent watching Kim, her husband, David and Robin Evans (the owner of the home in Westhaven), make a Christmas tree to be placed over the fireplace from 3 sticks…some plastic ties…jute…rosemary and a few vintage ornaments! (“Always try and use vintage,” Kim Leggett.)
I’m not kidding…it started off looking like this!
Next Kim laid out the sticks to form a tree (sort of…). If you can find sticks with lichen…the effect will be much more interesting. The good news is that most sticks are covered in lichen this time of year.
Once happy with the little tree, the corners were secured with plastic ties.
Next…you wrap the corners with jute or brown twine to hide the plastic ties. Just wrap until the plastic doesn’t show. This also helps to secure the corners of the tree.
Kim heads for the garden to cut some rosemary…because, remember…she’s bringing the outside in!
Now it’s time to decorate, but first…you have to place it decoratively!
Time to bring it inside and see how it looks!
And then Robin found some Vintage Tinsel Garland that she purchased awhile back, but if you Google Vintage Tinsel Garland, numerous resources appear. Be sure it’s VINTAGE!
A touch of the vintage silver tinsel was added and instead of a star…the top of the tree sports a small piece of pine perfectly placed.
When I left they were still adding subtle details to the tree and I heard David warn, “Keep adding stuff and it may fall!” I hope it didn’t.
If you’re home is more formal at Christmas, then consider making this and hanging it outside. I can tell you that it’s simple…fun and a real conversation piece.
Here’s what Kim has taught me…simply put – Just try it and don’t worry if it’s not perfect. Oh and one more thing…HAVE FUN!
