When you think about the 4th of July what comes to mind?
Is it a cookout…a day spent with friends…fireworks…a day at the beach…time spent at a lake…a getaway…a three day vacation…what comes to mind for you?
For me it’s all of the above plus celebrating my husband’s birthday, but there’s also more.
4th of July is about FREEDOM and the ever-present reminder that Freedom is never free. It comes with a huge price. Millions of men, women, and military animals have lost their lives fighting for my freedom.
I’m blessed to live in a country where I can worship freely – where you can worship freely – where we can speak our mind because we’re free, but also because our forefathers saw to it that we had the right to Freedom of Speech.
We take too many of our freedoms for granted. We forget that this rare unalienable right is not granted to many around the world. As I watch the evolution of freedom of speech, I’m saddened at how we treat others who disagree. It’s as though one right to freedom of speech trumps another’s. When we get lazy with freedom, everyone loses.
Freedom comes with responsibility. If you wish to live in freedom you must also assume responsibility for how it continues. Each of us has a responsibility to set the example for future generations. How we act today and treat others is the greatest foundation for how freedom continues.
I believe today is an opportunity for us to remember…reflect and understand that with the deep cost of living free in every possible way, we must honor it, take responsibility for it and use freedom wisely.
Wishing you a Happy 4th of July with full remembrance of how we got here.
May God Bless the United States of America and her Citizens.
