Okay…I’m a little embarrassed to admit this, but I’m a bit of a Mexican food snob. I’m sorry. It’s a thing when you grow up in Southern California, because clearly, Mexican food is pretty darn good and authentic.
I’ve eaten at a few since I’ve been here, but for whatever reason, nothing really made my heart sing until…
Tito’s! Oh my gosh…Thank You Tito’s!
This is a family-owned and operated business with a Tito’s in Spring Hill and Pueblo Real on West Main in Franklin, but about 6 weeks ago, Tito’s opened in Berry Farms. Now in all fairness, I knew about Pueblo Real, but every time I went there was a HUGE wait. I probably should have waited.
The new Tito’s in Berry Farms is a perfect family-friendly restaurant with an outdoor patio. It’s also spotless! Pristine…so clean.
The food…is authentic, which makes all the difference in the world. Everything is made from scratch including the chips and salsa. If you like your salsa spicy, ask your waiter to bring you the spicier version. We ended up with 4 different flavors of salsa and each one was delicious. My favorite was the hottest, but it has this great smoky flavor that I couldn’t get enough of.
I have to apologize in advance. I took the photos with my phone and the light wasn’t exactly great. I had no idea I’d be writing this post.
We had a little wait so we went to the bar where we met Ralph the bartender…welcoming, outgoing and a great conversationalist. Ralph also makes a great Gold Margarita. I had mine on the rocks with salt, but you can also get it blended.
They told us we would have a 45 minute wait (it was a Saturday night) but turned out to be about 18 minutes.
The menu is large and extensive but you can order a la carte if you choose. You don’t have to overdue on your dinner, because if you’re like I am…you probably ate a lot of chips and salsa before the main course.
My Mom had a beef taco (crispy), cheese enchilada, beans and rice. Now you should know that my Mom is a little lady but she ate her entire meal!
Mr. Dominic had a fajita quesadilla! I’ve never heard of this but basically it’s a fajita only smaller. Delicious.
I had a chille relleno (I like to think I’m a bit of an expert at chill rellenos) and it was the best of I’ve ever eaten. The relleno was stuffed with cheese, very lightly floured and the spicy chicken and salsa on top were excellent. I ate every bite. My dinner also came with a soft beef taco, but I couldn’t finish all of it.
Our waiter Phillipe, had just moved to Franklin and he was delightful. Ask for Phillipe…you won’t regret it.
Owner Jose was very present and what impressed me more than anything is that he wasn’t just wandering around supervising. He worked in the trenches with everyone. In a world where customer service often seems lacking, Jose takes service seriously.
As we approach our 3-year Anniversary in Franklin, it’s the little things that make the biggest difference and finding restaurants that feel like home is important. It took me awhile to discover Tito’s but it’s just one more thing that now feels right.
Authentic Mexican food is hard to find when you leave Southern California, but Tito’s is now our place. One day, I’ll brave the line to get into Pueblo Real.
