May I be totally honest with you? I always knew that I wanted to live where there are 4 complete seasons, but part of my fantasy was NOT to have temperatures drop to the 20’s in October! There I said it! I have this fantasy of quiet snow gently falling from the sky…pansies poking their heads through the snow and me sitting by the fire with Sassy, Emmie and Baxter reading a book! I know – so far it’s a BIG FANTASY! The first frost hit on October 25 and even though I had been warned about the effects it would have on my garden, I somehow needed to see it to actually believe it. Thankfully, the day before my new friend Rebecca Fly owner of Blooming Baskets, and her helper Sydney came to help us get ready. I met Rebecca at the Farmer’s Market and I feel so blessed that she is in my life, not just because she knows her plants and flowers, but because she is a joy! (I’m pretty excited about all our plans for Spring 2014,(they involve buttercups) but let’s first get through the winter!)
Earlier in the day, the firewood was delivered…and here’s something I learned about firewood…you should never cover it with a tarp because it attracts all kinds of bugs and nasty creatures. I laugh when I think how diligent we were at covering our firewood in Los Angeles!
Rebecca and Sydney arrived in the afternoon and gave me a lesson on what to cut back…what to take out…and what to leave alone. I’m pretty sure I don’t remember all the information, but thankfully, the lovely couple we bought our house from, had mostly planted hearty perennials. Whew!
The frost did arrive just as predicted. The garden isn’t looking too great these days, but with the frost comes the changing of the leaves. Something new to look forward to. And look at what survived the first and second nights of frost! Apparently roses are stronger than we think. I send you wishes for a warm and cozy fall in front of the fire with your friends, family, and a good book!
