Summer is in full swing and if you love action, then make a plan to attend one of the twilight Polo Matches in Franklin. This is a great family-friendly event but also a perfect way to spend some adult time with friends.
This is arena polo and it takes place at the Tractor Supply Co. Arena at the Park Harlinsdale Farm, so you don’t have to think about filling in the divots between chukkers (polo for a 7.5 minute period).
I went to the opening match between the USA and South Africa, which was a fundraiser for Friends of Franklin Parks and I really didn’t see much polo because we got rained out – I mean torrential rains, thunder and lightning, but we had a blast anyway.
We did manage to see two chukkers and just as I was settling in to watch the match – Mother Nature had a different plan. First a boom of thunder, followed by some major lightning – a rapid exit from the arena by the horses and an announcement for spectators to take shelter. So much for watching polo matches.
Here’s why we had so much fun…
First and foremost, almost everyone in Franklin is friendly – so there was lots of chatting with total strangers who just might become friends.
Second – We were all a little water logged – so there’s that.
Third – We were all there for a common purpose, which was to take in the polo and have a good time. Polo ended (thankfully, no one was hurt), but we all decided to have a good time together. There was lots of noise by the concession stand!
The announcers thought the storm would blow through in 15 minutes, but it lasted over an hour. You see why we made new friends?
I can’t wait to go back for the rematch between USA and South Africa on June 25th.
The men and women who ride the polo ponies are amazing athletes and it’s pure grace to watch these magnificent ponies in action. Want to learn more about the ponies – go here.

What to Wear to the Polo Matches?
Yes, polo is the sport of kings, but you don’t have to dress like you’re going to the Kentucky Derby. Nice -yes? High-heels, No! Big hats – not really because no one can see over you. Shade your face – Yep. Franklin is casual, but out of respect for the game of polo, perfect attire is sporty and relaxed. Ladies, wear flats.
