I promise I don’t go out to eat all the time. I really don’t. In fact, most nights you’ll find me cooking dinner. It’s pure coincidence that you’re getting two back-to-back posts about restaurants.
For a little over 2 1/2 years I’ve been searching for awesome Chinese food, and sadly, I’ve had little luck in my quest. Coming from California, Chinese food was a main stay of our family and I had oodles of restaurants to choose from. It’s just a thing.
I didn’t know I would miss Chinese so much, but I do. I also miss having a really great authentic Italian deli, but that’s a whole other story.
Just as I was about to give up on my search, I decided to ask my manicurist where she and her friends go to eat good Chinese food? She smiled and said, “Corner Asian Bistro in Brentwood.” I was skeptical but I went the same night and oh my gosh – she was right! This is the real deal Chinese food.
Here’s a little tip. When you enter a Chinese restaurant and find Asians eating there, you know it’s good.
Y’all might love Panda Express, but it’s NOT Chinese food.
I went back and sat down with owners Jenny and James Ren and their delightful manager, Claire. Jenny and James have lived in the Franklin/Brentwood area since 1987 and they’ve had numerous restaurants. In fact, they opened Miyako, the very first Japanese restaurant in the area, long before anyone was embracing sushi.
They have since moved on and opened Corner Asian Bistro (big brother to Corner Asian Cafe) a little over 4 months ago. Want to know what’s so great about this place? They have an Americanized menu and an authentic Chinese menu and you can order from both.
Jenny and James were ready to slow down and stop working, but Jenny had a big desire to open a great Chinese restaurant. Her husband told her that if she could find the chef…then it could happen.
“Finding a really good Chinese chef is NOT easy, “Jenny told me, “but somehow we found each other.”
Chef Xiai is from China and he is a master at creating a fresh authentic menu, finding the BEST produce and carefully selecting the specialty fish, and meats. Jenny says he’s very picky.
The menu is growing weekly, but I promise you, the items on it today, are superb. This is made-to-order, non-greasy, excellent food and it’s an art to make. Wok cooking and the type of knife skills needed to create the texture in the dishes is not commonplace.
I once tried to make authentic Chinese and it was not a success.
I’ve been twice and I’ve not eaten anything that wasn’t great.
If you like shrimp, I highly recommend General Tso’s shrimp. The biggest shrimp I’ve ever seen in this dish.
We also had Mongolian Beef, Stir Fried Green Beans and Fried Rice (My husband loves fried rice.)
When I went to meet Jenny, James and Claire, there was food and they wanted me to try the other side of the menu – Chinese Traditional.
We had Hot Pepper Chicken which is spicy and packed with flavor.
Fish Fillet with Hot Pepper, which is not spicy but super tender fish infused with a bit of chili flavor. But not hot!
And we also tasted the braised Pork Belly.
Everything is delicious and you will taste the difference. The staff is friendly and helpful and if you’re like I am and you crave some authentic Chinese food, this is your place.
Corner Asian Bistro is located at 210 Franklin Road, Brentwood. 615.810.9152
They will gladly accommodate large or small parties. Take out food is, of course, available and they serve beer and wine.
