Before you head out for a quick getaway, plan for your outdoor BBQs or head to the mall for the weekend sale…let us stop and remember and honor our fallen heroes. Memorial Day is so much more than just a time to spend with family and friends.
I am the daughter of a proud WWII Veteran. My Dad served in the United States Navy and he was stationed onboard a destroyer in the Pacific. He seldom talked about the atrocities he saw, but he talked a lot about how proud he was to serve his country. Dad is no longer with us, but his memory and legacy live on. He’s buried in California at the Riverside National Cemetery and he had a military burial.
I’m humbled by the sacrifice of our brave men and women in uniform, and of the families they leave behind…the worry and fear of not knowing.
Several years ago, I took my daughter to Paris for her college graduation and we made a trip to Normandy. I remember sitting on the beach and being brought to tears just trying to imagine what our young men were met with on that fateful day.
The United States flag flies 365 days a year in Normandy and it made me even more proud to be an American.
So let’s remember before we get caught up in our three-day weekend and honor our fallen soldiers…their families and those who are in uniform today. Fly your flag and let’s find a way to honor our soldiers.
