A long time ago before I moved to Franklin, I took care of my ex-husband’s parents for almost six years. Before you jump to any conclusions…I am not crazy, nor am I an angel. My former father-in-law was a wonderful grandfather to my daughter and he and I had a close relationship long after my divorce.
That might seem odd, but sometimes life is like that. You can read the whole story by going here.
His name was Bob and he asked if I would pay his bills and check on his wife when he had open-heart surgery at age 84! I thought, “No problem and said, Yes.” I knew nothing about caregiving and the importance of having excellent caregivers.
Long story short…He had his surgery, then suffered a stroke. His wife had Alzheimer’s and she wasn’t getting proper care. I had a big mess on my hands and I was way in over my head.
Today I’m a recovering perfectionist and control freak (not necessarily in that order), but at the time I was hell bent on fixing everything. It happens to most family caregivers. Problem was I couldn’t fix much of anything.
I needed caregivers and HELP, which is easier said than done.
Sadly it’s not so easy to find good in-home care.
After a lot of searching, I found and got the help I needed, but I’m here to tell you that NOT all in-home agencies are created equal, and if you end up with in-home care for your loved one that isn’t good, then your life has only gotten more difficult.
Shortly after I moved to Franklin I met Elizabeth Moss, founder of Caregivers by WholeCare and to say I was impressed would be a huge understatement. Elizabeth has extensive background in nursing, alcohol and drug treatment and geriatrics and she knew there had to be a better option for caregiving than what she was seeing 17 years ago.
Caregivers by WholeCare is not just any agency. They are dedicated to exceptional caregiving for individuals while also enriching and engaging in the person. They care for the whole person – body, mind and spirit. The spirit is what is so often forgotten and the one thing that needs the most nurturing.
There’s a reason doctors in Nashville use their caregivers for their own family members, while recommending them to their patients as well.
Here’s the biggest difference with Caregivers by WholeCare – they hire, train and honor their caregivers and treat them like family. They know that loyalty is paramount to the caregiver experience and on-going training is critical. They don’t take the caregiving experience lightly.
Franklin is home to many seniors – my Mom being one of them and right now, she’s healthy and vital and doesn’t need extra care, but when she does…I know who I’m calling.
Many of you…my wonderful readers, have written me about your concerns for finding good healthcare all the way around in Franklin and I’ve assured you that we have excellent doctors, but you can also have total confidence that when one of your parents or loved ones needs care and wants to stay at home (which most of us want to do, right?), you need not look any further than Caregivers by WholeCare.
In fact, you should know that I have such faith in this company that I invited them to be a sponsor of Discovering Franklin.
Caregiving is very personal to me. I know the nightmare of not having good help and also the joy when you have total trust in the person who is caring for your loved one. I am not an advocate for trying to do it all yourself. I know first-hand the exhaustion, frustration and personal suffering that comes from taking this position, and I love that Caregivers by WholeCare, under the guidance of Elizabeth, is dedicated to excellence and creating a peaceful environment for the entire family.
My recommendation if you think you might be in need of this service one day is to give them a call and start getting things in order. You’ll be glad you did, because there’s nothing better than peace of mind.
