I love shopping! I admit it…I can almost always find something to bring home. And truth be told…it doesn’t really matter where I’m shopping. I find something.
It’s an uncanny ability I have to be such a successful shopper! Coming from a big metropolis like Los Angeles – where shopping is a way of life…
I was, well…NERVOUS about shopping here in Franklin.
I definitely had that assumption wrong…on every possible level!
I also admit that I would rather make purchases for my home than for my body! So…I’m always searching for that perfect little thing to fill an empty space…
Or a wreath for my front door (Remember…I am not a crafty person. I so wish I was…but I’m really not.)
Or the perfect unique gift for a friend…
So you can imagine my joy when I entered Bagbey House – Antiques & Interiors! Right in Historic Downtown Franklin on 4th Avenue in the Historic Bennett House. That’s another post, but for now you can read about it here.
I experienced pure delight the moment I walked through the door. This is my kind of place!
Warning! This is NOT the store you visit if you’re short on time. This is the place where you wander and slow down because not only is it BIG…but every nook and cranny is filled with something.
This is the place where you DISCOVER! This is also Kris Bagbey’s place…and it oozes his charm and good nature. It’s impossible to be unhappy here.
If holiday decorating is part of your life, then you absolutely must come here to shop and gather inspiration. (Personally I just want Kris to come over and do it all for me, but I digress…)
I hung out with Kris for a few hours today and this is the first of several posts to come…because there’s just too much to share, plus he’s agreed to teach us to how to create our own masterpieces!
Super creative people fascinate me and Kris is super creative. He modestly shares that it’s always been “in my DNA,” and I believe him. He also says that he does “just a little bit of everything,” which would include floral arranging, interior decorating, transforming furniture and giving local merchants and artists a place to share their work. Bagbey House is a Merchant Mall with 13 rentable rooms within the house and it’s very cool!
Kris began his career when he realized that chemistry and algebra were NOT going to be his friends on his way to becoming a respiratory therapist! I can totally relate to the science and math thing!
So...he got a job in a flower shop in Southern Illinois as a delivery boy. But…as life happens…it was right around Mother’s Day and he said, “When it’s Mother’s Day…everyone learns how to tie a bow!” Kris’s career began the day he learned to tie a bow!
Eventually he bought that flower shop. He moved to Franklin in 1996 and went to work for Silk Tree Factory as their head floral designer. After a time there, he decided it was time…His Time and in 2009 he bought Carter Antiques…changed the name to Bagbey House and was located on 2nd Street for 3 years. After three years and another glorious “life thing” or “God thing,” Kris had to move and he landed the Historic Bennett House!
Kris’s favorite part of his business is meeting the people who visit from all over the world. “Yesterday it was Australia,” he told me. Really? Australia? People from Australia come to visit Franklin?
“It’s building customer relationships that matters and listening to everyone’s story. That’s the best part of my day,” says Kris.
When I was there…he received numerous calls from people ordering Halloween decorations to be shipped all over the country.
This is what I love about Franklin…creative people sharing their work with a generous spirit and an eagerness to get to know you and me! It’s rare and it’s special and it’s the norm in Franklin. Thank you Kris for your generosity of time and laughter.
Tomorrow Kris shows us how to refurbish a shoddy piece of furniture with his new paint find…I know…I’m teasing you…but it’s coming, I promise.
Let’s continue to support local business with our shopping and loyalty and be sure to visit Bagbey House Antiques & Interiors when you come to Franklin.
