Some people think I get excited about odd things and maybe it’s true. Little things really do excite me, but recently I discovered a big thing…an important thing in the world of Cindy.
You know by now that I lived practically my whole life in Los Angeles – the land of amazing food! I mean there is nothing that you can’t find in Los Angeles and the truth is that if you’re a foodie, like I am…you seek out the best and once in a while – you indulge your food senses. You also seek out the best butcher and fishmonger, and never in my wildest dreams did I consider that I might not be able to find these things in Franklin!
I love Franklin and I’m not being disrespectful, but coming from Los Angeles, I’ve been very spoiled and I’ve had a hard time finding a really good butcher- a butcher who just gets it and delivers amazing customer service and satisfaction…
Until NOW! Hello Carniovre Market – you make my heart sing! Only open since November 2014, they have already created quite a name for themselves. The Botha’s, Virginia (a native Tennessean) and her husband, SJ (a transplant from South Africa) have brought, not only their love of excellent, high quality meats, beef jerky, sausages, South African dried meat delights, but also their dedication to offering the absolute best quality and customer service.
“We really care about all aspects of our business, but our first order of business is to offer only top quality meats and products and then we create a customer experience, because everything we do is custom.” And Virginia’s not kidding. She and SJ are dedicated to offering the freshest products in their most natural state – “the way nature intended to be eaten.” “We think meat or poultry that hasn’t spent several days on a truck on its way to a grocery store, just tastes better.”
Steaks are cut to order. Beef is ground per your specifications. Poultry is cut per just the way you want it, and if you happen to have a recipe that requires a certain cut or trim…you can have that, too. I happen to be a lover of lamb and thankfully, Carnivore Market carries some of the best lamb I’ve ever tasted.
All of their beef and poultry are free of antibiotics, hormones and steroids – guaranteed, but SJ also dries his own meat and we’re not talking that awful beef jerky you buy at the gas station. SJ’s gourmet jerky comes in a host of flavors and is tender and robust. On my first visit I was introduced to Biltong and Droewors, South African delicacies, which are cured on site at Carnivore Market. Both made their way to my kitchen and are now gone!
You can also find a fine selection of cheeses along with Benton bacon and country ham and sausages are made on site .And we’re not talking about breakfast sausage here, either, although I’m think SJ’s sausage would go really well with eggs. These are sausages that are freshly ground and filled with an ecclectic blend of spices. In fact, you might want to pick some up for Super Bowl Sunday!
And speaking of the big game…Carnivore Market has a variety of delicious platters to make sure that your guests eat like kings and queens, but that will free you up from spending a lot of time in the kitchen. They offer 4 different types of platters from a simple cold cut platter to a Something Meaty Platter, which you guessed it is a combination of their best meats and jerkys. Call to order in advance but do yourself a favor and order.
What makes me so happy about Carnivore Market is that first and foremost Virginia and SJ Botha are wonderful people who truly care about their business and the Franklin Community…plus…I know I’m eating top quality meat and poultry that I can have any way I want it. I’ve not been able to find this service since moving to Franklin and I thought I had to settle for just being fussy…but now I know, I don’t.
Carnivore Market makes us think differently about shopping. In South Africa and around the world, most people are accustomed to frequenting specialty shops for their food. For us, it’s a new way of thinking, but I think it’s about less expediency and more about the quality of the food you feed your family and yourself and also the sense of community we create by shopping locally.
This is all about finding joy in simpler things. You’re going to love Carnivore Market.
