I’ve never been a big brunch person especially if it’s a buffet brunch. I tend to get overwhelmed with all the food choices and feel full before I ever get started. For me, the best thing about brunch is getting together with friends and the champagne! This past Sunday, we experienced our first Southern Brunch and I have to say…that I still might not be a brunch person, but the food was delicious! Definitely a heart attack on a plate, but delicious nonetheless. We went to Henpeck Village Market, an old home set in the Franklin countryside. It’s about 6 minutes from our house and they had just re-opened Sunday brunch. And what a brunch it is! They served everything from friend chicken (so delicious) to the usual breakfast items, drop biscuits, veggies (but not steamed), salads (like from my childhood) and more. My brain was saying, “Don’t eat this! You aren’t supposed to eat this stuff! Don’t do it, Cindy!” But I decided that being a food snob and depriving myself of this experience would be a BIG MISTAKE! So I ate and loved each and every bite! The fried chicken was out of this world and confirmed what I already knew: If you’re going to eat it, make sure the person who made it knows exactly what he/she is doing! (I’m off the hook. I never have to make it.)
Here’s the thing: You can’t eat like this every day or even every week, but you can allow yourself to relax the rules and taste small amounts of this delicious Southern home cooking. It was truly a party in my mouth! The best part of the morning though, was sitting outside on the patio under the trees with our new friends and being surrounded by majesty of nature. Fall is slowly inching its way upon us and Sunday morning, although warm, felt like early fall. Everywhere you looked there was beauty. It’s one of the things I love about Franklin, simple, quiet, peaceful beauty.
I’ll admit that I also felt a little melancholy. It hit me that brunches with pals in L.A. or San Juan Capistrano or Newport Beach would not be a normal occurrence. They would now have to be a planned event. It’s funny how and when these moments hit me. Often it’s the simplest thing that I want to share with someone, and I realize that I can’t. I know my friends are reading this and I want you to know that I miss each and every one of you. I hear your voice, but I miss your face…your smile…your life and even your tears. Know that I love you and you are never out of my heart or my thoughts. I promise that when you come to visit, we’ll take a trip to The Henpeck Village Market and you can experience first-hand a real Southern Brunch. Everyday I’m reminded of the importance of this… Who are you dear Readers? Leave a comment and let me know you’re out there.
